Create Luck

As the duo 'Lucky Escape', we wanted to create an opportunity to showcase and push our abilities. This self-initiated project offered just that. Playing with the 'Lucky' part of our name, we felt the sentiment of 'creating luck' reflected many of our values. The phrase also had the angle that we could literally create something lucky. We researched many creatures and items relating to good fortunes, but the luck brought from seeing a phoenix was one that resonated with us.

So we built 'Yoshi' (which means ‘good luck’) a papercraft phoenix, which measures almost a metre in height. Its design was based on a mixture of references such as historical Eastern Asian illustrations and the South African Secretary bird. Each of its many feathers were hand-cut to create a highly detailed model. Once created the model could be exhibited and photographed to create a limited run of posters.
